Council concerned about dog attacks

The Waitaki District Council has serious concerns about the increasing number of dog attacks in the district.

The council's regulatory services manager, Lichelle Guyan, said four attacks on people occurred in November, and all were by pitbull-type breeds.

So far this year, 17 dog attacks had been reported, compared with 13 in the previous year.

In addition, 344 complaints about wandering, lost or found dogs were recorded in the past five months; 71 more than in the same period last year.

Mrs Guyan said with the holiday season, more people would be out walking and enjoying the weather, and the council wants to ensure the streets are safe for everyone.
