The weather in the lower North Island is making the hunt for a missing man "challenging", police say.

Michael MacGregor was last seen on Monday just after midday at the Rocky Lookout, Mt Holdsworth, northeast of Wellington. He was wearing shorts, a hoodie and possibly a hat.

The search on Wednesday was focused on the wider Rocky Lookout and the Totara Flats areas, and on Thursday focused on the Atiwhakatu Stream and Lower Holdsworth area.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, using thermal imaging, and a drone might be used, but police said this was dependent on the weather.

"Weather conditions in the area continue to be challenging."

Helping police were several LandSAR volunteer teams and Amateur Radio Emergency Communications volunteers.

An appeal for information had a "great response" police said on Wednesday, but they were still hoping for more.

Anyone who had seen MacGregor or has information on his whereabouts was urged to call police on 111, quoting event number P055522968.
