Less than a week after health authorities warned the public to guard against mosquito bites, the Northern Marianas reported its first case of dengue fever yesterday.
The Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation said the person infected with the virus had just returned from a trip to Palau, where the disease was most likely contracted.
The patient is reportedly now in a good condition.
The hospital said it received the report of a suspected dengue case a couple of weeks ago and immediately took steps to contain the spread of the virus.
Health authorities have assured the public that the chance of a dengue outbreak in the CNMI is low.
One thing working in the CNMI's favour is while dengue fever is transmitted by two types of mosquitoes, only one of those species is present in the territory.
