The former Anglican archbishop of Cape Town was discharged from hospital on Wednesday after successful surgery to treat recurring infections.

It follows past treatment for prostate cancer.

The 84-year-old was Johannesburg's first black bishop, and won global acclaim by speaking against white minority rule from his pulpit.

During the 1980s he played an unequalled role in drawing national and international attention to the iniquities of apartheid, and in 1984 he won the Nobel Prize for Peace.
