MetService is warning of norwest gales and heavy winds for Te Whanganui a Tara- Wellington and parts of Te Waipounamu- the South Island.
A series of fronts is moving northeast over southern and central New Zealand tonight, and tomorrow will bring bursts of heavy rain and severe northwesterly gales.
A strong wind warning is in force for Wairarapa, Wellington and Marlborough - northwest gales could peak at 120 kilometres an hour in exposed places.
MetService said motorists, especially those driving high-sided vehicles and motorcycles, should be careful.
In Te Waipounamu, Westland is under a heavy rain warning.
And a strong wind warning has been issued for the Canterbury High Country, where northwest gales could peak at 120 kilometres an hour and damage trees, powerlines and unsecured structures.
