Water restrictions in the Greater Wellington region will be eased this week.

Wellington Water said thanks to ongoing efforts to conserve water, Wellington, Lower Hutt, Upper Hutt and Porirua would all move down to Level 1 water restrictions on Wednesday.

Those areas have been in Level 2 restrictions since mid-January, which has meant a total ban on household garden sprinklers and irrigation systems.

The chief executive of Wellington Water, Tonia Haskell, said if the situation remained stable, Wellington, Porirua, and Lower Hutt would move out of water restrictions entirely the following Wednesday.

Upper Hutt remains on at least Level 1 restrictions year-round.
