Twigg booked her place in her third Olympic final after comfortably coming first in her semifinal.
NZ swimmer Lewis Clareburt has also qualified for Friday's 200m individual medley final after coming fourth in his semi-final. Clareburt finished with a time of 1:57:55 to qualify seventh for the final tomorrow.
Earlier, the Black Ferns kicked off their Olympic campaign with a 29-7 win over Kenya.
New Zealand also had its first gold medal, as Grace Prendergast and Kerri Gowler won the New Zealand Rowing squad's second medal of the Olympics when they raced in the women's coxless pair final.
Kiwi BMX rider Rebecca Petch has also qualified for Friday's semifinals, despite crashing in her quarterfinal.
