Edgecumbe College reopened this week, almost a month after the Bay of Plenty town was severely flooded.

Principal Luow Olivier said many of the students had lost their work.

He said assignments left in the music, art and physical education classrooms were ruined by floodwaters.

Mr Olivier said the holidays, rather than regular school hours, will be used to catch up.

"We have to work through the holidays to help them to get it done. I feel sorry for the students, and to be quite frank I feel sorry for the teachers as well because it is time they will have to come in and do the additional work."

Mr Olivier said only a few students so far had used the trauma specialists sent by the Ministry of Education.

However, he expected more would turn to counsellors in the coming weeks.
