Man charged after Invercargill shooting

A man has been charged with attempted murder after a person was shot in Brown Street in Invercargill on Saturday.

The 29-year-old was arrested about 7pm this evening after briefly fleeing police.

"During the pursuit a police officer was knocked down by the fleeing vehicle," Southland acting area commander Inspector Jon Bisset said.

The officer received minor injuries during the arrest.

The impact dislodged the officer's firearm which was spotted and secured by a member of the public,

The man is to appear in Invercargill District Court tomorrow morning.

"A vehicle belonging to another member of the public also sustained minor damage after being struck by the offender's car," Mr Bisset said.

The occupant of the car is not injured.

The man injured on Saturday remains in Southland Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
