NZTA plans new speed limits near Moeraki Boulders

The NZ Transport Agency is proposing new speed restrictions near a popular South Island tourist destination, following a crash that killed a Chinese woman last year.

The agency did a safety assessment of State Highway 1 near the turn-off to the Moeraki Boulders in response to the fatal crash and community concerns.

Spokesperson Ian Duncan said it was aware of five crashes resulting in injury at the intersection between 2011 and 2016.

Mr Duncan said it wanted to install an electronic warning system, that required drivers on the highway to slow down as they passed the turn-off.

He said the system would only alert vehicles to reduce their speed to 70km/h when there were cars waiting at the intersection.
