Meanwhile, a State of Emergency has been lifted in Dunedin, but the Emergency Operations Centre will remain open as the clean up gets underway in the wake of ex-cyclone Fehi.

Power has been restored to some parts of the country, but thousands still remained without overnight.

The Tasman District Council said the region didn't suffer more storm damage overnight.

Some people were evacuated from their homes in Nelson yesterday as the storm surge caused flooding.

Fire and Emergency said they had a quiet night around the country, with few weather related call outs.

There are still numerous road-closures in both islands due to flooding and slips including in Central Otago: State Highway 8 between Roxburgh and Millers Flat, and State Highway 90 from Tapanui to Waikoikoi.

Buller Civil Defence said the high-tide came and went without a major storm surge.

Taranaki Civil Defence also monitored the tide overnight - it said there was a large swell but no threat to property.
