Police in Northland have released the name of the tourist who drowned at Ninety Mile Beach last week.
She was Carolin Klara Jentsch, from Germany.
Ms Jentsch, 23, was swimming in rough surf last Wednesday with her boyfriend, also from Germany, when the pair got into difficulties.
The man was saved by an off-duty Far North police officer Darren Critchley - who borrowed a life jacket and surfboard and went to the rescue.
He battled his way back out to save Ms Jentsch, but found her unconscious and face down in the water.
Ambulance officers at the scene were unable to revive her.
