Remembering Nelson Mandela

06:54 am on 7 December 2013

As you probably know, Nelson Mandela died on Friday and the world has been paying tribute to the man credited as the father of modern South Africa.

In an address to the nation just before midnight local time, South African President Jacob Zuma broke the news saying South Africa had lost it's greatest son and the people had lost a father.

Tributes have been flooding in for the anti-apartheid campaigner and South Africa's first black president, including from US President Barack Obama, who said Nelson Mandela was an inspiration.

Around the world the media have been commemorating the death of 'Madiba' in many ways.

Highlights include The Guaradian publishing extracts of audio from Mandela's statement from the dock before he was given his life sentence in 1964, and Aljazeera has this interactive timeline of Nelson Mandela's life.

Next week New Yorker magazine will be dedicating its cover to Mandela, with a portrait by Kadir Nelson. The artist recently made a children's book about his personal hero.

But possibly the most fascinating record of Mandela's extraordinary life comes is the Nelson Mandela Centre Of Memory. The interactive website allows you to explore his life through an archived mash-up of video, photos and audio.
