Enquiries into the circumstances are underway.

Christchurch City council head of recreation, sports and events Nigel Cox said the pool would be closed for the rest of today and tomorrow.

"Our thoughts are with the family at this tragic time," he said in a statement.

"Given a police investigation is underway, we won't be making any further comment at this time."

People in Christchurch were flocking to pools and playgrounds as the city's temperature hit a 28 degrees this afternoon.
