The Papua New Guinea Hunters rugby league team slumped to an embarrassing 56-4 defeat in last night's Intrust Super Cup clash away to the Burleigh Bears.

The Hunters trailed 22-0 at half-time and conceded 10 tries in all at Pizzey Park, with Bears captain and PNG Kumuls international prop Luke Page among eight individual scorers for the home side.

Brandon Nima's 51st minute try was the only points the visitors could muster over the 80 minutes as the Bears retained the Kokoda Cup, which is played for annually between the two clubs during the ANZAC round.

A seventh defeat in eight games keeps the Hunters in 13th place in the overall standings, with only the Central Queensland Capras below them.

The PNG side are back at home next weekend against the Townsville Blackhawks before the competition takes a break, where veteran halfback Ase Boas will have another chance to score the five points he needs to become the first Hunter to score 500 points in the Intrust Super Cup.
