The criminal court in Papeete has given jail sentences of up to seven years to 21 people involved in a methamphetamine smuggling ring.

The ring was discovered in January last year, when three women arriving from Los Angeles were arrested for possession of the banned drug.

The ring leader was jailed for seven years while the drug carriers were given one-year terms.

The court heard testimony of deceit and coercion within the ring.

Some of the carriers made several trips to Los Angeles to import the drug to Tahiti, with some reportedly facing death threats to themselves or their family in order to force them to keep working as mules.

They have been fined a total of $US2.3 million for importing over a kilogramme of the drug.
