The police are investigating a suspicious fire at an Auckland North Shore fire station in the early hours of Sunday.

The New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union confirmed that the fire happened at the Birkenhead station, when there were four crew members on their night shift.

The police said they were called to the fire at Mokoia Road around 1.45am on Sunday.

They said no injuries have been reported.

New Zealand Professional Firefighters Union vice president Jeffrey Shrimpton said the station has sustained some damage.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said the firefighters on site were alerted by the fire alarm, and were able to extinguish the fire quickly.

They said the fire has caused minor damage to one room at the station.

Impacted firefighters are being supported, they said.
