Official figures show food prices fell 0.8 percent in April, compared with a slight fall in March.
Grocery prices dropped, led by declines for cakes, biscuits, snack foods and chocolate.
Non-alcoholic beverages and meat also fell, but prices for fruit, vegetables and ready-to-eat meals climbed.
Statistics New Zealand's consumer prices manager Matthew Haigh said the cost of throwing a party fell last month.
"Lower prices for grocery foods such as potato chips, chocolate biscuits, and crackers... other party favourites, such as soft drinks, grapes, and carrots, also fell in price," he said.
On an annual basis, food prices rose 0.2 percent.
