There has been a cool response in New Caledonia to a suggestion for a fourth referendum on independence from France after last December's controversial vote.

Pro-independence parties say they don't recognise the result, which showed 96.5 percent voted against independence.

They boycotted the vote because of the pandemic, and now the Palika party says a fresh vote should be held by 2024 but under the supervision of the United Nations.

The anti-independence Caledonia Together party says the UN would never oversee such a plebiscite.

It says instead work should be undertaken to draw up a new statute after the three no-votes.

The mainly Wallisian Pacific Awakening party says attention should be paid to internal issues as no talks with Paris on the institutional future are expected until September because of the upcoming French presidential and parliamentary elections.
