Marlborough is now in a prohibited fire season due to an increased fire risk in the region.
Fire and Emergency Marlborough district manager Grant Haywood said the current hot, dry weather was the reason for the change. The changes took effect from 27 January at 8am.
It meant lighting fires in open air was not allowed, including on Department of Conservation land.
"We now have very high fire danger across the region," he said.
There was a lot more dry material around than last year.
"Fires will start and spread very easily and could be extremely difficult to contain."
The public is being asked to avoid any activity that could cause a spark in dry areas, such as welding, grinding or parking vehicles in long, dry grass.
Old fires should be checked to ensure they are fully extinguished. To be absolutely sure, rake them out and apply water.
"If you see signs of smoke dial 111."
In a prohibited fire season there are some activities permitted, such as hangi and umu, but people are urged follow Fire and Emergency's safety advice.
