The Office of the Ombudsman is investigating complaints about Foreign Minister Murray McCully's decision not to release official information about the Malaysian diplomat case.

News organisations have complained, saying the release of the information on Muhammad Rizalman is in the public interest.

Mr Rizalman was charged with burglary and sexual assault of a woman in Wellington in May this year but was allowed to claim diplomatic immunity and leave the country.

Mr McCully came under fire for his involvement in the botched handling of the case.

Chief Ombudsman Beverley Wakeham said her office had gone back to Mr McCully and asked him to review his information.

She said it was a business-as-usual complaint and was being dealt with in the normal way.
