Waikawa Museum in Southland closed today as a result of the unidentified substance's discovery.

Fire and Emergency staff alerted the police, who in turn arranged for the Defence Force to deal with it.

Police said they still could not confirm what the material was, but an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team successfully disposed of it this afternoon.
