A spoonful of sugar

07:39 am on 4 November 2013

New research says thousands of obese and overweight people's health could be improved by the introduction of a tax on sugary drinks, Stuff reports.

A study published in the British Medical Journal at the weekend said a 20 per cent tax on drinks with added sugar could reduce the number of obese and overweight people in the UK by 465,000.

Experts, like University of Otago Wellington public health researcher associate professor Nick Wilson, say such a move would have very similar effects in New Zealand.

A previous study found such taxes would be a "nightmare to administer".
