Maritime authorities in French Polynesia have identified a Chinese ship as the source of hundreds of unused plastic bags washed up on Hiva Oa in the Marquesas Islands.
They said the ship is the Hai Yang 2, while the bags appear to be packaging for calamari bound for the Chinese market.
Trying to tracking down the vessel, the authorities said it travelled from the south Atlantic past Argentina and then along Chile.
The authorities said they were trying to contact the vessel.
Earlier reports said the bags were for calamari of different sizes caught off Chile.
The authorities said some bags may wash up in the Tuamotus.
