Niue police are investigating an opposition MP who brought a bag of marijuana into parliament.
Terry Coe has said he brought the drug into the house to show how easy it was to obtain in Niue.
But Niue's police chief, Tony Edwards, said the March incident was now under police investigation.
Niue's assembly is expected to vote at its next session on whether Mr Coe breached parliamentary laws.
Mr Coe said he understood cleaners destroyed the bag of cannabis, which he was given by a third party.
According to a report presented to a recent assembly meeting, police were investigating whether the substance in the bag was illicit.
"However, this would be difficult given there is no proof of the product," it said.
"Some members were seen handling the product outside Chambers following the meeting and it is not known to the Speaker when it was returned to the Chambers and by whom."
