A dog photographed alongside a missing Ōtaki woman is in safe hands.

Michaela Leger, 29, was last seen on Saturday evening at Raumati beach, dragging a kayak, with a dog alongside her.

Kāpiti Coast District Council said the dog was being looked after by its Animal Management team.

A council spokesperson said the dog was microchipped and Leger was not listed as its current owner on the National Dog Register.

But the person listed as the dog's owner had been in contact with the council, they said.

Police have found a kayak paddle in their search for the missing woman, who is alleged to have stolen a yellow, two-person kayak from a Raumati property.

It is unclear whether the paddle found by police is the one Leger was seen with.

Police said they were extremely concerned for her safety and were working to support her whānau.

Since 22 October, searches have been made by the Coast Guard, Surf Lifesaving, search and rescue teams, the Department of Conservation, and the Air Force.
