Police have arrested a person after the Armed Offenders Squad was deployed on Tuesday.
"Police would like to thank the community for their patience while we worked to resolve the situation," a spokesperson for the Eastern District police said.
Police were called to an address in Colin St just before 8am.
Wairoa College acting principal Kimberley Mahy said the school spent an hour locked down after the Armed Offenders Squad call-out.
The school is about 1.5km from the address police have focused their inquiries on.
Mahy said students were debriefed after the school returned to normal just before 11am.
Earlier this afternoon police said they were still trying "to resolve an ongoing incident" and the street was still blocked off.
"There is not thought to be any ongoing danger to members of the Wairoa community," the statement said.
Anyone who saw anything suspicious or concerning in the area was asked to contact police on 111.
