Fiji's opposition National Federation Party has taken issue with a claim from the Economy Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum that they are playing politics in their response to the Budget.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum was quoted by the FBC saying the contribution by the Opposition is full of hot air, lacks substance and is like pie in the sky.

But the NFP leader, Dr Biman Prasad, said the economy minister's reaction showed he did not understand the role of the opposition to scrutinise the Budget.

He said Mr Sayed-Khaiyum's claims were nonsense.

"The Budget is an election budget. It is an irresponsible budget, it is a vote buying budget and we maintain that quite clearly and we have pointed out why."
