National MP Todd Barclay is confident he can fend off a challenge from within the National Party for his Clutha-Southland seat.

Mr Barclay is facing competition from former Merrill Lynch investment banker Simon Flood.

The MP was embroiled in controversy this year after two electorate staff members and the electorate chairman quit, prompting him to deny he had mistreated staff.

Mr Barclay remained adamant the National Party and his electorate was behind him, despite Mr Flood putting his name forward.

"I don't want to get into the details of that. I think there's obviously a disaffected aspect of former staff members who aren't too comfortable with change," Mr Barclay said.

"We've worked hard over the last three [years] my team and I, and we've got a lot to show for it.

"I'm just focused on doing the best I can and putting my best foot forward. I love this job, I love my electorate and I put my heart and soul into it, and I want to do it again for the next three years."
