All but 62 of the 7262 cases were detected after the borders were reopened in July and mandatory quarantine requirements were abolished to boost tourism.

A curfew is in force in Tahiti and Moorea to try to curb the spread of the virus.

The French president Emmanuel Macron declared another lockdown for all of France but said it would be up to the administrations in French overseas territories to adapt the measures.

New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna, whose borders are largely closed, are Covid-free and have no internal restrictions.
