The Health Minister says 34 health professionals from New Zealand want to join the International efforts to combat Ebola in West Africa.

Medical professionals have been able to register their interest in helping following the Government's commitment to send up to 24 volunteers as part of an Australian-led mission in Sierra Leone.

Dr Coleman said New Zealanders had already been involved in the International response through NGOs, and others had put up their hands asking how they could be part of the New Zealand response.

It was expected to be at least six weeks before any volunteers were deployed to Sierra Leone.
