The Breakers coach Dean Vickerman is pleased with his side's effort despite conceding the Australian basketball league's minor premiership to Cairns with an 81-77 loss to them in Auckland on Sunday.

The Breakers needed to beat the visitors by an unlikely 26 points in their final regular season game to claim the minor premiership, along with home advantage throughout the playoffs.

Instead that honour has gone to the Taipans, while the Breakers are second seeds and will play Adelaide in the semi-finals.

The scores were level at half-time at 40-40 and despite the result, Vickerman says he's pleased with the fight the team showed to get back in the contest.

The Breakers will play the red-hot 36ers, who've won their last 10 games, in the three-match series - game one is in Auckland on Thursday.

The Taipans will play the fourth-placed qualifiers, the champion Perth Wildcats, in the playoffs.
