One person has died and six people have been injured after a school bus crash southeast of Whanganui.
Police said they were notified of the single-vehicle crash on Makirikiri Road, in Turakina village, about 3pm.
The driver died at the scene and six passengers suffered minor-to-moderate injuries. The injured people were assessed by ambulance staff.
A Rangitikei school is confirmed its school bus was the one involved.
Makirikiri School principal Greg Allan said all of his students were safe with their parents.
Police said the road would be closed for some time and the Serious Crash Unit was investigating.
