Police have named the hunter who was fatally shot in Tolaga Bay on Saturday as John James Stuart Atkins.
Atkins, 44, was injured on Tauwhareparae Road at about 10.30pm and died in hospital several hours later.
Detective inspector Dave de Lange said it was a "tragic incident" but enquiries into the events that led to Atkins death were ongoing.
"Our thoughts are with Mr Atkin's family at this difficult time, and we are providing support to those involved."
A Gisborne man, 39, appeared in the Gisborne District Court on Monday, charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, de Lange said.
The man was expected to reappear on 9 September.
