A 61-year-old man has admitted to careless use of a firearm causing the death of his son on a Stewart Island hunting trip two months ago.
Stephen Phillip Long fired a shot from about 20 metres away at what he believed was a deer but instead shot his 24-year-old son, Samuel Phillip Long.

In the Invercargill District Court today he was remanded at large until sentencing in August.
Chief executive of Otago Fish and Game Nial Watson said the case was a brutal reminder of the need for absolute safety when hunting.
"I think it's a horrific tragedy and people need to realise, hunters need to realise, that firearms are particularly unforgiving and an accident can often have very serious, if not, fatal consequences."
