A polytech is stepping in to save what it describes as school dropouts.
NorthTec in Whangarei has launched a new course for those who struggle with the academic nature of classes.
It's capturing 16 to 19-year-olds who need a credits boost for NCEA level 2.
The students are said to be enjoying lessons in engineering, mechanics, sports, computers, hospitality, visual arts, the environment, and Maori.
Te Reo and Tikanga tutor Anton Fa'atau says their automotive equipment is particularly good.
He says the facilities are amazing, and if he had the chance he'd jump to take the course.
Mr Fa'atau says the students get to make and take home their own small motorbike.
Lessons are offered as part of the Government's Youth Guarantee scheme.
