Crackdown on betting by jockeys

New Zealand's racing authorities have announced a crackdown on betting by jockeys.

The moves comes after the rider David Walker was charged with two counts of betting on one horse and then reining in his own mount during the same race.

A hearing is scheduled for 18 September.

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing has now announced tough new rules to prevent jockeys from betting on a race if they are riding in any race themselves that day.

Historically, jockeys have been permitted to bet on a race provided they were not competing in it.

The new rules come into effect tomorrow.
