Volcanic alert drops on White Island

18:14 pm on 9 May 2016

The volcanic alert level for White Island has been lowered one level after a drop-off in volcanic activity.

On a scale of five, the level is now one, which signifies minor volcanic unrest.

Seismic activity has slowly declined since an eruption was detected on the Bay of Plenty island on 27 April.

GNS Science said a visual inspection by plane on Friday confirmed no further eruptive activity.
