A child critically injured in a vehicle incident in South Auckland is believed to have been run over by a car backing out of a driveway.

A police spokesperson said they were alerted to the collision at a residential property on Coxhead Road in Manurewa, just after midday on Tuesday.

The child was rushed to Starship Hospital in a critical condition, police said.

Te Whatu Ora said the child was currently stable but would not confirm if they were still in an intensive care unit.

A neighbour who helped with giving first aid to the child, Steve Watts, said the boy was run over by a car backing out of the driveway.

About half a dozen people passing by helped to lift up the car to extract the boy, he said.

Watts said himself and another person passing by gave CPR to the child and checked his pulse before the ambulance arrived.

He said he understood from the family that the boy suffered extensive injuries, including broken ribs, broken collar bones and a crushed chest.
