A body has been found after a car crashed and sank in a waterway on Canterbury's State Highway 8 earlier today.
Police said the body was recovered in the water near Ōhau B Canal Bridge on State Highway 8 this evening.
A search has been under way since the car plunged off the bridge south of Twizel this morning.
A shoreline and water search today did not find anybody in the vehicle, but the body recovered soon after was believed to be from the car, police said.
The formal investigation was yet to be completed and the person's identity had not been released.
Police had not yet said if there was believed to be anybody else in the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The crash crash was reported about 6.50am.
A spokesperson said earlier today that it was believed the car had collided with a barrier on the Ōhau B Canal Bridge and fallen into the water.
One lane of State Highway 8 (Twizel-Ōmarama Road) remained open while the search continued.
Temporary road closures would continue to allow a scene examination to take place.
