08:52 am on 4 August 2019

MetService has issued a warning of snow to low levels in the South Island, heavy rain in Westland, and gales in the lower North Island this morning.

A very cold southwesterly is forecast to bring snow down to 100 metres, in Southland, Clutha and southern Fiordland.

A brief period of heavy rain is expected in Westland.

Westerly gales might become severe in exposed parts of southern Hawke's Bay and northern Wairarapa this morning.

Snow has closed part of State Highway 93 in Southland, between Clinton and Mataura.

It also closed State Highway 94 in Fiordland from Te Anau north to Milford.
