A collapsed wastewater pipe in Petone on a major thoroughfare has caused "significant" slump in the road.
Wellington Water said a section of the wastewater pipe under The Esplanade on the Petone foreshore had dislodged causing the slump over time.
It has filled in the hole for now while it plans for a repair.
The pipeline was over 2.5 metres deep and the work could take about a week, it said.
Wellington Water said it would do its best to avoid disruption to motorists.
