Police responded to reports of a firearm being discharged from a vehicle near the Moturoa shopping centre about 1pm.

No one was injured at the scene.

Senior Sergeant Phil Quinn said a two-door sports car fitting the vehicle's description was seen in Westown shortly after and it fled when approached by police.

It then crashed on Tukapa Street.

Mr Quinn said a man was arrested after fleeing the crash scene and a firearm was recovered from the car.

The man is being treated at Taranaki Base Hospital for injuries from the crash.

Senior Sergeant Quinn is unable to say whether the shooting was related to a house occupied by Mongrel Mob in Moturoa.
