Governor Lolo Moliga said a payment of $US3.2 million had been received and he was hopeful the insurer would pay another $5 million.

Insurance Commissioner Peter Fuimaono confirmed to KHJ News the payment was received a few days before Thanksgiving.

Lloyds also made an initial payment of $5 million.

Fuimaono said the government's total claim was for $15 million.

Meanwhile, American Samoa is also to receive $US23 million from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The grant is part of the federal government's long-term disaster recovery assistance following Tropical Cyclone Gita last year.

The funding comes through a special appropriation passed by Congress in 2019 in response to major disasters.
