The grant is part of the federal government's long-term disaster recovery assistance following Tropical Cyclone Gita last year.

The funding comes through a special appropriation passed by Congress in 2019 in response to major disasters.

Congresswoman Aumua Amata said the grant could "make a big difference" in American Samoa.

It will be administered by the American Samoa Department of Commerce.

Its director, Keniseli Lafaele, said priority would be given to areas such as housing, economic revitalisation and infrastructure.
