Thousands of people's crops affected by Gita in American Samoa

About 3000 people in American Samoa have had their crops damaged by Cyclone Gita in February according to the territory's agriculture director.

Filifaatali Mike Fuiava said those affected are eligible for compensation from a $US500,000 crop fund from the US Department of Agriculturre.

Filifaatali said the funds have been channeled through his department to the the Department of Human and Social Services.

He said that department were awaiting a final decision on how the money will be distributed.

The agriculture director said his department would verify the people who have suffered crop damage.
