The latest case of an animal which had to be put down after a rodeo is further proof the events should be banned, an animal welfare group says.
A bull had to be killed after breaking its leg at the Nelson rodeo at the weekend.
More than 42,000 people have signed a petition by Save Animals From Exploitation (SAFE) to ban rodeos in New Zealand.
SAFE spokeswoman Mandy Carter said it was the second animal to die this rodeo summer season they were aware of.
She said the animals in a rodeo experienced extreme fear and distress, and there was no humane way to run the events, so there must be a complete ban.
The Rodeo Cowboys Association said an animal did occasionally have to be put down but it was rare.
