Police are warning about a fake kidnapping phone scam from individuals claiming to be from the Chinese consulate.
They have received several complaints in the past week from the Chinese community, particularly international students, who have been sent the automated messages.
People who followed instructions in the message spoke to a person who convinced them to provide personal details, as well as those of their family members in China.
The family members were then contacted and told the relative in New Zealand had been kidnapped, before demanding money.
Police said this scam has also been reported overseas and they are working with their international partners.
They said if anyone believes they are being scammed, they should contact authorities.
