Campbell has struggled to regain the form that saw him win the US Open in 2005, and the 46-year-old has apparently called time on his career, after 15 professional victories.

He told Radio Sport that he was proud of his achievements.

"I fulfilled one of my dreams to win a major and it was fantastic," he said.

"As everyone knows, it's been well-documented that my career since then hasn't been great but, if I walk away right now from the game, I can be very proud of my achievements."

Campbell has faced personal problems, including a separation from his wife about 18 months ago, and injuries, including problems with a tendon in his left ankle.

He said he was looking forward to spending more time with his children.
