Police are appealing for sightings of Adrian Humphreys' vehicle travelling between Rotorua and Tāngarākau on 6 May - the day before his death.
Detective Senior Sergeant Gerard Bouterey says a police investigation team has been working to establish Adrian's movements in the days prior to his death.
"This will help us identify the route Adrian took between Rotorua and Tāngarākau, and establish if he came into contact with anyone while travelling," Bouterey said.
Police understand Humphreys left Rotorua around 7.30-8am on Friday 6 May, travelling in a grey Ssangyong Korando SUV, registration JFZ167.
He then arrived in Taumaranui around 10am before departing BP Taumaranui service station at 10.15am.
The vehicle was towing a trailer with the registration S946T.
Detective Senior Sergeant Bouterey said Humphreys had a bicycle attached to the front of the trailer and a canvas tent contained in the trailer.
He urged anyone who recalled seeing Humphreys or his vehicle travelling between Rotorua and Bushlands Campground in Tāngarākau, to contact police.
Police have established a dedicated phone number for the investigation into Humphreys' death - 0800 287 453.
